Abstract
17,904. Romeyn, J. Aug. 6. Starting; reversing.-In an engine which may be reversed by adjusting the cams axially and which is started by compressed air, separate cylinders or groups of cylinders being brought into normal working in succession, the starting and fuel valvelevers are mounted eccentrically and are controlled by rods, the lower ends of which work in slotted guides and are adjusted therein by hand-actuated cranks. Fig. 2 shows the apparatus for controlling one group of cylinders. The starting-valve lever 21 and the fuel-valve lever 23 are mounted on an eccentric 20, adjusted by means of a rod 32 the lower end 33 of which moves in a slotted guide 34 and is connected by a link 31 with the crank 29. The slot in the guide 34 is so designed that when the crank occupies the position 5 the fuel-valve is in action, and when it occupies positions 1, 2, or 3 the starting-valve is in action. The other group of cylinders is controlled by a similar apparatus adjusted by another crank on the shaft 28, and the slots are so designed as to allow of any of the following methods of working :-(1) both groups working on compressed air ; (2) one group working on compressed air and the other on fuel; (3) both groups working on fuel; (4).one group working on compressed air, the other being idle ; (5) one group working on fuel, the other being idle. In the position shown, both groups are out of action.
