Abstract

12,417. Peterson, C. J. May 26, 1908, [Convention date]. Motor power plant.-The power of an internal-combustion engine is increased, and starting and reversing are facilitated, by using the lower ends of the cylinders as compressedair engine cylinders. Fig. 2 shows a section through one of the cylinders of a three-cylinder engine. The exhaust valves 7 for the upper ends of the cylinders are operated by cams on a half-speed shaft 8, and the distribution of compressed air for the lower ends of the cylinders is effected by slide valves 11 operated by double cams on a second half-speed shaft 16. The shaft 16 also carries eccentrics for operating the igniters. To adjust the valve gear and ignition mechanism for reversing, the shafts 16, 8 are moved axially by a single hand-lever, and pins on the shafts working in slots in the bosses of the gear wheels adjust the shafts angularly relatively.to the crank-shaft, the shaft 16 turning through 120 degrees. The engine is started by admitting compressed air from a reservoir to the valve-chests 12. One of the cylinders is connected at its lower end to a pipe 28, Fig. 3, fitted with automatic inlet and delivery valves 31, 32 so that the lower end of this cylinder may be used as a pump to charge the reservoir. The valves 31, 32 may be held closed by stops 31<a>, 32<a>, when not in use.
