Abstract

Drum or barrel winding-machines; laying or guiding ropes on or off during winding or unwinding; fair-leads.-Winding-apparatus suitable for use as a substitute for the ordinary capstan comprises a power - driven drum 5 mounted in a pit 1 below the ground level, the wire rope 21 being led off in any direction by a guide-sheave 27 mounted in brackets on a turntable 23 and adapted to be swung downwards into the pit when not in use, so as to leave the surface clear. The drum 5 is mounted to slide on a square or similar sleeve 4, which is loose on the driving-shaft 2 but may be clutched thereto. In order that the point at which the rope leaves the drum may always be below the sheave 27, the drum is moved endways, as the coiling or uncoiling proceeds, by a nut thereon engaging a screwed shaft which is mounted in bearings on the sleeve 4 and carries a pinion engaging a stationary wheel 32. In a modification, the drum is moved axially by a lever operated by a screw-and-nut device as the drum rotates. The shaft 2 is driven through a train of reduction gearing from an electric motor, and the clutch for connecting the shaft 2 to the sleeve 4 may be operated simultaneously with the starting-switch of the motor.
