Abstract
7671. Legrand, L. April 1. Retting-apparatus.-A retting-apparatus comprises one or several retting-chambers 4 in each of which the flax or other textile is contained between two grids or gratings 7, 7<a>, a reinforcing-heam 6 at the top of each chamber 4 serving to hold the upper grating 7; overflow pipes 11, 12 divert the used water into a common gutter 13 communicating with a valved discharge conduit 14, so that the water can run to waste or into another retting-chamber freshly filled with flax. The tepid water required is obtained from an apparatus comprising a cold - water tank communicating with a boiler through which the water circulates continuously, and becomes heated and discharges into a tepid-water reservoir 3 placed lower than the tank. From the reservoir 3, the tepid water flows through a pipe 10 to double conduits 5, of which the lower pipes are of larger bore than the upper, and thence through oblique orifices to the chambers 4. The upper pipes discharge continuously during retting, the lower only when the fermentation becomes more active. The current of warm clean water rises in the chamber, while the denser gummy solution sinks and is drawn off by pipes 8 leading to the overflow pipes 11, 12. Both inlet pipes 5 and outlet pipes 8 are so connected as to be used for the reverse purposes if required.
