Abstract
3815. Farley, J. Feb. 15. Filter-beds; supplying liquid in connexion with filters.-In an arrangement for distributing sewage into a filter-bed or into land at a short distance below the surface, the liquid passes from a chamber or reservoir b<x> through pipes c having distributing-drains d with perforated sides placed longitudinally above them and connected to them by passages e. A partition b<1> normally retains the liquid in the chamber b<x> at such a level that the liquid is forced out of the drains d, excess liquid overflowing the partition into a chamber b<xx> and passing thence through a pipe i to other distributing-chambers. The opening of a valve h causes a fall in liquid-level in the chamber b<x> and stops discharge through the corresponding pipes c, which however remain full of liquid. Collecting-drains g are placed in the land or filter-bed at some distance from the pipes c. The drains d may be protected by shields of shingle or loose stones, and may be provided with sludge chambers at the ends.
