Abstract

7318. Jennings, W. F. March 27. Stoppering.-Relates to a bottle-stoppering machine in which the stoppering is effected while the bottle is being traversed from one point to another. The machine is shown adapted for applying screwstoppers and as applied to a rotary filling-machine. The bottles to be stoppered are removed from the table a of the filling-machine by a continuously rotating transmitter d, Figs. 1 and 3, having camoperated gripping-arms g, and are carried under the stoppering-devices while being supported on friction rollers 45. The stoppers are fed from a hopper v, Figs. 1 and 3, and carried by friction bands w along an horizontal feeder x until arrested by spring-jaws y situated in the circumferential path of a stoppering-cylinder 2, Fig. 3, which has a to-and-fro movement between the stopper feed and the bottle to be stoppered, and also a rising and falling motion. Within the stoppering-cylinder is a rising and falling and continuously rotating stoppering plunger 7, having a friction disk 8 to engage the stopper. The stoppering-cylinder has a gap 3 adapted to enclose the endmost stopper in the feeder x, which is released from the jaws y by a portion 6 of the cylinder during its upward movement, and passes freely into the cylinder and enters spring-grips 4. The stoppering-cylinder retraces its path into a position vertically over the neck of the bottle to be stoppered and then descends to embrace the mouth of the bottle, the stopper being forced out of the grips 4 and applied by the plunger 7. In operation, on the completion of the stoppering of a bottle, the cylinder 2 advances at an increased speed towards the feeder x to receive a stopper, and back again at the same increased speed into a position over the neck of the next bottle, the compound movements taking place during the travel of the bottle through onesixth of a revolution of the disk d. All the motions are derived from a vertical shaft through vertical and horizontal countershafts, cranks, eccentrics, and bevel gearing, spring devices being provided for compensating for irregularities in the heights of the bottles.
