Abstract

4039. Caverley, W. W. Feb. 17. Ladder escapes.-Ladder-escape apparatus for ships, houses. &c. consists of platforms F connected by folding ladders I and suspended by folding links G from brackets E on a rock-shaft P, whereby the apparatus, when folded, is swung inwards. The ladders are constructed with the treads pivoted to pairs of sides I<1>, I<2>, which are pivoted to the platforms above, and slide in guides on the platforms below, the ladders being locked when in use by spring catches F<7> engaging projections I<7> on the sides I<1>. The ladders are provided with folding hand-rails N. supported by bars N<1>, N<2> pivoted to the sidemembers I' and engaging clips N<6>, N' on the side-members I<2>, the hand-rails being operated by the movement of the ladder, by links N<5> pivoted to the side-members I<2> and to the bars N<1>. The links G are connected by diagonal wires, which keep the platforms in alinement and tend to draw the ends of the links together, and by telescopic spring rods W. The platforms are raised and lowered by ropes K passing over pulleys L to counterweights working in tubes Y on the inside of the ship &c. When the apparatus is to be raised, the bottom catch F<7> is first released by hand; the remaining catches are then released automatically in turn by the lower platforms coming into the folded position.
