Abstract

21,732. Oxnard, H. E. Sept. 24. Pneumatic springs. -Relates to piston-andcylinder devices particularly applicable as supporting-springs for vehicles, and of the kind in which a flexible diaphragm is fixed at its edges to a cylinder and acted upon at its centre portion by a piston, the diaphragm rolling off the cylinder on to the piston, and vice versa, as the piston moves into and out of the cylinder. The invention consists in an improved jointing-arrangement where the diaphragm is attached to the cylinder and piston. Fig. 1 shows the diaphragm 10, which consists of a rubber portion 14, on each side of which are cemented fabric portions 13, 15 attached to the end wall 25 of the cylinder 3 by means of a rubber packing-piece 18, which is compressed by a nut 6 so as to squeeze the rubber radially against the rubber portion 14 of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is attached to the piston 4 in a similar way by means of a rubber block 17 and cap 21. Ridges 23 are provided on the parts between which the rubber blocks 17, 18 are compressed. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the cylinder is in two portions between which the diaphragm is confined by means of a rubber packing-piece 18<1> and an auxiliary packing-piece 18". The diaphragm is attached to a wooden head 4<1> on the piston.
