Abstract

Dash - pots; composite and india - rubber springs. - Relates to road-vehicle suspension arrangements of the kind having tension springs each comprising an india-rubber tube or thimble connected at one end to the vehicle frame, the other end resting upon, or being attached to a rigid member extending within the tube and connected with the wheel axle. The invention consists in providing a fluid-pressure device for retarding the return movement of the tube. Figs. 1 and 3 show the india-rubber tube A with its flanged end a attached to the vehicle frame D and its closed end abutting against the upper end of a rod B, the lower end of which is united to the wheel axle b<1> by a universal joint b<2>. Fig. 1 shows a piston b<3> on the rod B working within a cylinder C so as to admit air through a valve E when the tube is stretched, the air being compressed during the rebound. The air may expand into a flexible chamber F, extension of which may automatically operate a relief valve. In Fig. 3, the cylinder C is shown arranged outside the tube A, and a passage c', controlled by a screw valve E<1>, is provided for the passage of liquid or air from one side of the tube to the other.
