Abstract

2577. Elkington, V. Jan. 31. Actuating; locking.-A valve of the balancedpiston type is provided with packing - rings pressed outwards by fluid pressure, and with a guard for protecting the packing in the inlet when the valve is open, The valve 5 slides in a casing 2, and is connected by a stem 12 to a forked rack 11 engaged by a pinion 20 operated by a spindle and hand-wheel 23. The valve is provided with longitudinal passages 6 to conduct the fluid behind, and so balance, the piston. A packing-ring 7 is held between the valve 5 and an annular member 8, the fluid pressure having access to the rear of the packing-ring to produce a tight joint when the valve is closed. The inlet 3 of the valve is provided with a washer 19 pressed outwards by fluid pressure, which has access to the rear of the washer through ducts 32. When the valve is open, the washer 19 is protected by a ring member 18 connected by a rod 16 to a rack 14. The rack 14 is provided with a recess which, when the valve is open, prevents the pinion 20 from engaging the rack 14. Rotation of the wheel 23 then closes the valve 5. but does not affect the member 18. When the valve reaches its seating, it forces the ring 18 away and so brings the rack 14 into engagement with the pinion 20. When the valve is subsequently opened, the ring 18 moves with the valve until it covers the washer 19. The rack 14 is then out of engagement with the pinion 20 and the further opening of the valve leaves the ring 18 in its position covering the washer 19. A piece of gauze 30 prevents dust &c. from entering the chamber 2. The handle 23 is provided with notches adapted to be engaged by a latch 27 for locking the valve in any position.
