Abstract
28,755. Chaddock, G. A. Dec. 20. Horizontally and vertically pivoted sashes, in combination, opened and closed simultaneously. -Relates to windows of the kind described in Specification 25,063/06, consisting of a vertically pivoted sash 2, and a horizontally pivoted sash 3 mounted in a vertically sliding frame 4, the sashes 2, 3 opening simultaneously when the frame 4 is raised by a shaft 5 which is rotated by bevel-gearing. The lower end of the shaft 5 and the shaft 14 are mounted in bearings carried by a plate 10 which is secured in a recess in the portion 9 of the mullion 7 of the fixed sash 1, the mullion consisting of two parts 8, 9. The handle 6 is formed with a square pin 15 engaging a socket in the shaft 14 and may be attached thereto by means of a split pin 18. The shaft 5 is in two portions, the upper portion, which passes freely through a stepped helical guide 21 of the form described in Specification 21,740/02, having secured on its lower end a sleeve 12 having a square socket which engages the squared end of the lower part of the shaft 5. The upper end of the sleeve 12 abuts against the fixing-plate 20 of the guide member 21, this fixing-plate being formed with a rib or ribs 24 on its underside to prevent water from getting underneath it. The upper end of the shaft 5 is screwed and works in a sleeve 29 secured to a plate 28 on the frame 4, so that when the shaft 5 is turned the frame 4 is raised, thus causing the pivoted sash 3, which is connected to the fixed frame by links 31, to open. During this movement, the projections 33 on the sleeve 29 slide in slots in the boss 34 on a plate 26 on the sash 2, but when the collar 35 abuts against the underside of the plate 26, the sash 2 is first raised and then rotates owing to the engagement of the sleeve 23 and the sash with the helical guide 21. The upper portion 27 of the sleeve 29 is thickened to give greater strength; and to prevent the projections 33 from entering the wrong slots when the window is closed, one projection is made wider than the other, as shown in Fig. 6.
