UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
WILLIE J; FAIRBANK, OF SOLDIER, KANSAS.
DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, /VILLIE J. FAIRBANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Soldier, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to door or gate fasteners.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong, simple and durable fastening device which can be easily applied to the door or gate and which can be sold at a comparatively low cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character which may be changed at a minutes notice from a fastener for use on right hand doors to a fastener for use on left hand doors, or for a fastener to be used in connection with sliding doors.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device applied to a sliding door, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a plan view of a device applied to a swinging door, Fig. 5 is a rear elevation thereof, Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 4.
Referring more especially to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 represents the door and 2 the jamb or frame therefor. The door is provided with three vertically alined apertures 3, 4 and 5, the intermediate one being considerably larger than the first and last mentioned apertures, and being adapted to receive the shank of the operating member 6. Secured to the front side of the door by bolts 7 and. 8, which pass through the apertures 3 and 5 respectively is the front or escutcheon plate 9, which receives and bears the enlarged head 10, of the operating shank which carries the handle 11. The rear of the shank is supported by a plate Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 8, 1908.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Serial No. 437,407.
door 1 by the bolts 7 and 8. This collar is I provided with an enlarged neck 13 so as to receive the spiral operating spring 14, whose ends are engaged respectively with the pin 15 carried on the collar 12, and with a lateral lug 16, projecting inwardly from the latching member 17, adjacent the inturned handle end 18. The latching member is keyed to the shank 6 by a set screw 19, and is provided at one end with right angular latch extension 20, which is adapted to ride up upon the inclined face 21, of the keeper 22, and which is engaged in the notch 23. When it is desired to change the device so as to be utilized upon a door running in an opposite direction it is simply necessary to reverse the latch member 17 and the spiral spring.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the keeper 24 is held upon the inside of the jamb 25, and a latch member 26 rides up over its inclined surface and falls into the notch as is usual. The latching member in this instance is rovided with a handle end 27, similar in all respects to the handle 18, and the opposite end instead of being made at right angles to the line of the latch member is-made perfectly straight and has a flat side as at 28. The projection 13 of the collar 12 is provided with a notch at 29 which is engaged by the lug 30 on the latching member so as to limit the movement of the latter.
From the fore oing description, taken in connection with t 1e accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended eX lanation.
Various changes in the 'orm, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a fastening device, the combination with an operating shank, of a rotating latching member adjustably connected to the shank, resilient means to hold said latching member from rotation, and means whereby said latching member may be reversed.
2. In a fastening device, the combination I with an operating shank, of means for journaling the shank in a door or gate, an inter- In testimony whereof I have herennto set changeable latching device adjustably conmy hand in presence of two subscribing Witnected to the shank, resilient means to nornesses.
inally prevent the shank and latching device VILLIE J. FAIRBANK. 5 from rotating, and means to limit the movel Witnesses:
ment of the shank and latching device in ROY R. KING,
both directions. B. L. MIGKEL.
