[Cognate Application, 10,761/12.] Chain or cord fastenings.-Relates to expanding bracelets, watch wristlets, &c., and to other articles constructed of flexible chain-work such as garters, and chains used in closing the mouths of bags, purses, &c., and comprises relativelyslidable links having an adjusting-chain passed therethrough, connected at its ends to a winding-device which serves either automatically or by positive action as a fastening to hold the bracelet in its contracted condition. Figs. 3, 5, 8<A>, and 9 show a watch wristlet comprising two lengths of chain-work A, A<1>, which are connected to attachments a<2> on the watch and to a case d<1> containing the winding - mechanism, and which consist of links a having pins a<5> sliding in slots in the links b and tubular guides g for the adjusting-chain f. The case d<1> contains a drum d, to which the ends of the chain are attached, the drum being rotated to wind up the chain by a handle d<3> and locked in position by a ratchet-wheel and pawl e, e<1>, Fig. 9, the pawl extending through the case to form a release pusher e<2>. In a modification. Figs. 13 and 15, the winding-device takes up the chain when rotated in either direction and has a positive locking and releasing mechanism. The winding- drum d is rigidly connected to a rotatable operating-disk d<3> constituting the cover of the case and surrounds a sleeve d<6> attached to the bottom of the case. The upper portion d<7> of the sleeve forms a guide for two sliding bolts g, g<1>, which engage, when pressed outwards by inclined camedges i<1> on a pusher i, with an annular series of teeth h carried by the disk d<3>. The pusher i has at its inner end a sleeve i<3> containing a spring i<4>, which contacts frictionally with the inside of the sleeve d<6> to retain the pusher in position. The teeth h are suitably rounded to press back the bolts when the pusher is pulled out. Springs may be used to withdraw the bolts, or the cam may be arranged both to release and engage the bolts, or a rotary campiece may be used. As shown in Fig. 20, a volute spring m is attached to and automatically rotates the drum d, which is locked by projections n<1> on a pusher n engaging in notches d<6>, d<7> on the upper edges of a central fixed sleeve d<5> and the drum respectively.
