Abstract
24,782. Falkiner, R. S. Nov. 24, 1910, [Convention date]. Horse and like hair clippers. - Consists in driving - mechanism in which the driving-shaft 2 is mounted in a tubular casing 1, a loose bevelgear 4 being adapted to be clutched to the shaft to transmit motion to the flexible or other shafting leading to the hand piece to be driven. Several such devices may be mounted on the shaft 2 and in the casing 1 to drive a corresponding number of flexible shafts The bevel-gear 4 is arranged within a grease-tight chamber 7, the ends of which provide supporting- bearings for the shaft 2, a removable cover 8 being provided. The clutch part 12 adapted to connect the loose gear 4 to the shaft comprises a bush or sleeve having a collar 13 and screwed on to a sleeve 9 slidably feathered to the shaft. The clutch is operated by a lever attached to a spindle 20 carrying a fork 18 engaging projecting pins on opposite sides of a transversely-divided grooved ring 15 encircling the collar 13 on the clutch member 12. The flexible shaft 6 may be of gut or other suitable material and is arranged within a helically wound cover 21 secured at the lower end to a sleeve 27 by a screw 28 or other means, and at the upper end within the split end of a sleeve 22 by means of a clamping-nut 22<a> screwed thereon. The sleeve 22 is clamped on to a radially projecting cylindrical portion 23 of the tubular casing 1 by means of a thumb - screw upon a bolt passing through lugs upon the upper split end of the sleeve. The upper end of the flexible shaft 6 is provided with a solid portion 29 formed with a feather 30 and adapted to slide into a sleeve 31 to which the driven bevel-pinion 5 is secured, the sleeve 31 being mounted in a bearing 32 within the projecting portion 23 of the tubular casing. The lower end of the flexible shaft 6 is connected to the hand-piece by means of a swivel or pivotal joint comprising a casing 34 formed in two portions and held together by a bolt 35 allowing relative rotary motion between such portions. A pair of bevel - wheels 33 are mounted upon the bolt 35 and mesh with bevel-pinions 36 upon the ends of the respective shaft portions 6, allowing rotary motion to be transmitted at varying angles. The bevel - wheels 33 are coupled together and provided with a strengthening-sleeve 38.
