Gas-producer furnaces.-In apparatus for the gasification of coal two or more vertical retorts and one or more gas producers are built together' so that gas from the producer may be used for heating a retort or retorts and water-gas, coal gas, and producer gas may be simultaneously generated. The structure comprises a producer a and retorts c, d surrounded by heating flues o through which the producer gas from the "blow" is passed and burned with secondary air preheated in the brick-work u<2> and led to the flues o by a conduit u<3> and passages q, r, s, t controlled by dampers w. During the " run " the hot water-gas is passed through the flues o to the outlet o<3>. The lower chamber c<2> of the retort has an interchangeable bottom c<3> for which may be substituted firebars d' when the retort is operated for complete gasification, discharging doors g being provided. Coal gas is generated in one retort c, and from the other retort d producer gas is obtained, air and steam being introduced through inlets e. Provision is made for the admission of steam by pipes h, i into either or both the retorts, and if desired both retorts may be used for the generation of coal gas.
