Abstract

Propelling by screw propellers and paddlewheels.-In ships formed of two hulls connected by a common deck and having a longitudinal passage, an obstacleclearing wheel and several paddle-wheels and screw propellers are employed. These paddles and propellers may be driven collectively or independently. The wheel 17, Figs. 4 and 5, for clearing away obstacles is formed of an openwork cylinder and runs freely. This wheel and the paddle - wheels 8, 9, 10 are arranged as shown in the passage above mentioned, and the propellers are arranged in undercut or cored-out portions extending along the ship. The propellers 22 are reversibly mounted on short s h a f t s supported by brackets 24, Fig. 7, and are driven by toothed gearing, part of which 27, 28 is in a casing 29, and part inside the ship.
