Abstract

9130. Dewson, E. H. July 25, 1910, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Track apparatus for stopping trains.-Trip valves for automatically applying fluid-pressure brakes of railway vehicles by means of an actuating-member on the track are constructed so that the valve, when actuated, is held in the open position until a predetermined interval of time has elapsed, or until a predetermined alteration of train-pipe pressure has occurred. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form of valve, comprising a rotary valve 5 connected to a trip arm 7 and formed with ports 10, which, when the arm 7 is actuated, communicate with atmospheric ports 8, 9 in the valve seat. A coiled spring 16, 17 opposes the opening of the valve; but the valve is retained open by the pressure from the train-pipe 13 acting on its face, until the fall in train-pipe pressure is sufficient to allow the spring 16 to return the valve. The valve may be provided with vane 20 so disposed that the flow of the train-pipe air acting thereon tends to maintain the valve open. In a modified form, Fig. 3, the trip-lever 24 is formed with a projection 25 which normally holds a piston 22 so as to cover an exhaust port 27. When the lever 24 is tripped, the piston 22 is forced downwards until the pressure in the train-pipe 13 is sufficiently reduced to allow a spring 23 to return the piston, whereupon the lever 24 falls back to its vertical position.
