Boxes; glands and caps.-In order to check leakage past a gland C, Fig. 6, packing D is inserted between the gland and its box, and packing-rings K, M<1>. M between the gland and the shaft. The packing D may be round or rectangular in section, and may be further compressed by the action of a bevelled ring or by a bevelled surface formed on the flange B. Distance-pieces of metal or hard fibre may be inserted between the flange Band the gland C. The packing-rings K, M<1>, M are held in recesses in the gland by plates L. The rings K, M<1> are of metal, and the ring M of hard fibre or similar material. The ring K may be recessed in various manners, as shown in Fig. 7. The joints in a divided gland C', Fig. 8, may be packed by fibrous plugs R.
