Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In a tandemcylinder engine producing two impulses per revolution, adjacent combustion chambers a, a<1> are charged from a crank chamber b and the front end c of the cylinder a<1>, respectively. The hollow pistons e, e<1> are connected by a trunk d having a partition plate at f and ports o, o<1>, which serve as air-inlet ports to the pump spaces and admission ports to the cylinders. At the end of each stroke, explosive mixture enters the pumps through terminal ports m, while air charges for scavenging are admitted through the sleeve d and ports o or o', which coincide with. their respective inlet ports p<1>, p. At the ends of the working strokes, the combustion products escape through terminal ports n, the fresh charges entering the cylinders when the ports o, o' communicate with ports r'.
