Abstract
2977. Clifford, G. R. Feb. 6. Hydroplane vessels.- In order to increase the lifting - action at the bow of the vessel and to deflect the bow wave and utilize it for further increase of the lifting- action, the bow 56 is extended laterally and forwardly as shown in the Figures. The bottom of the vessel is flat and slopes gradually downwards to the section 20 from which point to the stern the slope is decreased, forming the bottom of two planes. The stern of the vessel is of similar form to the bow to prevent drag. Stays may be fitted between the hull and the extended bow and stern portions, and these portions may be pivoted horizontally. The forward part of the bow forms a thin horizontal edge near the water surface, and may be strengthened by a vertical web. In one modification, the forwardly extended portion of the bow is dispensed with, but the lateral portions are extended as above described.
