Abstract

8468. Doyle, D. Sept. 29. Pneumatic collectors. -Relates to road scavengering machines of the kind in which air is blown on to the road surface and then sucked up again into the machine where the dust is deposited. The invention consists mainly in (1) furnishing the nozzle with sheeting which makes an air-tight joint between the air shaft and the road surface, (2) providing means for sucking more air up than is blown down, and (3) placing removable bags under the hoppers in the machine. Air is blown down a shaft A, Fig. 1, on to the road at D from a fan F driven from the wheels of the vehicle. The dust-laden air is forced up a shaft U into the body of the vehicle, and, having deposited the greater part of its dust in the hoppers N, X, is filtered by a screen S before it passes down the shafts W to the fan. The dust is collected in bags which are placed under the hoppers, and which are removable through a door DR. To prevent the escape of air at the road surface, trailing flaps P, B are arranged in conjunction with side sheeting E, Fig. 2. The flap P hinged at H, Fig. 4, consists of light boards with leather or similar material fastened to the middle of each to make an air-tight joint between them. An india-rubber tip T formed with a spring downwards is secured to the flap. The side sheeting E consists of basil or india-rubber sheets SH, NG, Fig. 5, weighted by chains C, CN, between which a brush of horse-hair, unspun flax, or the like is secured for the purpose of filtering any escaping air. A lapel Z of rubber is fastened to the inner sheets. The after flap B is held down by a chain CH. Arrangements may be used for causing more air to be sucked up than is blown down. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, part of the air from the fan is allowed to blow off through a movable flap Q and is filtered by a screen SC before passing to the atmosphere. In a modification, air is blown on the road through valve-controlled pipes arranged in a circle, and the dusty air is sucked up a central flue. Bellows or screw fans may be used instead of the centrifugal fan F.
