Abstract

4148. Day & Sons, J., Day, A., and Naylor, W. Feb. 19. Packing granular &c materials into bags.- Relates to machines for filling bags, and consists of a device for ejecting a bag that has received an insufficient supply of material. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to machines of the type described in Specifications 8355/01, 11,360/03, 11,189/04, and 4573/09, and is shown as applied to such machines. The bags d, with or without boxes, are fed along a trough c by means of a reciprocating pusher z. The charges are pressed down by a rammer, not shown, carried on a bracket r mounted on a vertical rod p, which receives an up-and-down motion from a lever l driven by a cam k. A plate 6, adapted to enter the mouth of the bag after filling, is carried by a rod 5 sliding in the bracket r and connected to a rod 4 by a piece 7 resting on the bracket r. The lower end of the rod 4 rests on a spring lever 8. If the bag is properly filled, the plate 6 resting on the charge holds up the rod 4, while the rammer is free to descend to press down the contents of the succeeding bag. If, however, the bag is insufficiently filled as the rammer descends, the rod 4 depresses the lever 8. The movement of the lever releases a catch from contact with a stop on a rod 13 which is then raised by a spring 24. In rising, the rod 13 passes through the bottom of the trough &c. and expels the incompletely-filled bag which is pushed out of the way by a plunger 27 connected with the pusher z. The ejector-rod 13 is retracted by the action of a cam 23 and the lever 8 re-sets itself when the rod 4 &c. is raised by the rod p.
