Abstract

1867. M³hleisen, H. W. Jan. 25. Bore-hole apparatus.-In drilling- apparatus for prospecting, sinking wells &c., the cutter head comprises two concentric tubes 5, 6 with a spirallyarranged series of openings 7 closed by temporary fillings. Abrasive material supplied from a vessel 17 by air or water from the supply-pipe 16<1> packs between the tubes 5, 6, causing flaring and thus giving clearance internally and externally. As the cutter wears away, the openings 7 are successively brought into action as cutting - teeth. During drilling, the cap 14' is removed to allow the debris to overflow. To remove the core, the cap 14<1> is secured to the sleeve 14, the drill tube is detached from the swivel 9 by unscrewing the cap 12, and compressed air is supplied through a pipe 15' to raise the core 10<1> through the tube.
