Dust, confining and expelling on generation.- Relates to apparatus for the removal of the dust in abrading, polishing, grinding, scouring, and analogous machines, more particularly machines for operating upon the soles and heels of boots, and consists essentially in tne employment of several air blasts directed on to the abrading- member at right-angles to its surface, in combination with the usual exhaust blast. A machine is shown with scouring or abrading rolls mounted on a shaft 2, each roll being provided with a dustconfining hood 5 and a bell-mouthed exhaust passage 6. Two air blasts represented by arrows 7, 8 are directed upon each roll at right-angles to its surface and are deflected by contact with the roll into the direction of the exhaust draught. The blast openings are arranged in close proximity to the roll, and the opening for the blast 7 is preferably formed by a lip 17 which divides the current in the blast pipe 16. The hollow portion 12 of the hood may be replaced by a tube. The hood is preferably hinged at 14 so that it may be raised clear of the roll, but may be pivoted so as to move sideways. The number of exhaust fans 18 and blowers 13 may be varied as desired. The invention permits the ready employment and removal of split scouring-rolls adapted to be supported at both ends.
