Description

VACUUM CLEANER Filed Aug. 18, 1934 Patented sept. 22, lass- PATENT oFFicE VACUUM CLEANER Robert Schiittle, Beichenbach-on-the-Fils,
Germ
application August 1s, 1934, serial No. 140,499 In Germany August 19, 1933 lclaim.
The invention relates to vacuum cleaners for cleaning oors, carpets, furniture and other ar ticles by means of .a suction head or mouth piece which ismoved along the article in close proximity thereto while a powerful stream of airis sucked through the mouthpiece, generally by means o f an electrically driven fan. In some such machines the mouthpiece is made vertically adjustable. and in others it is made horizontally movable.
The object of my invention is to enable the mouthpiece to accommodate itself automatically to inequalities, and for this purpose I mount it so that it is rotatable about a horizontal axis.
If a rotary brush or beater is arranged within the mouthpiece, as is now frequently the case. the axis about which the mouthpiece can rotate is preferably made to coincide with the axis of the brush or beater. The bearings are preferably v 2o made vertically adjustable-to allow of regulating the normal clearance between the mouthpiece andtheiloor. f
An embodiment of the invention is shown inthe accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of the front portion of the vacuum cleaner,
Fig. 2 a central ve tical section of this part o! the apparatus, and i v Fig. 3 is a front view of the apparatus, partly in 30 section.
The apparatus has a suction box or casing I witha slot I4 at each side; 'In each slot a block 4 is vertically adjustable by means of a screw spindle 5. Each block I carries inside the casing 35 a ilangeddisk i. and the two disks i form bear- `tially surrounding said beater,
ings for the mouthpiece 2V of the apparatus, so that the mouthpiece is rotatable about a horic zontai axis. Two rounded portions 21 of the mouthpiece t against packing -strips I, to make an airtight joint. 5 By turning the screw spindles 5 the clearance n: between the mouthpiece and floor can be increased or reduced, as required.
The apparatus has wheels I2 mounted between brackets which are fixed t0 the suction box, 10 and within the mouthpiece there is a rotary brush or beater 3 carried by ball bearings I3 on studs I5 projecting inwards from the blocks I. 'Ihe brush or beater is driven by a belt 9 and spindle I I.
If there is no brush or beater in the mouthpiece 1s the mouthpiece itself may be rotatably mounted on the studs I5.
What I claimas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States isi-i` 20 In a vacuum cleaner, the combination of a suction box ,having a downwardly facing opening, a beater rotatable about a horizontal axis in said suction box, a mouthpiece in said opening parhaving lips `for contacting with the floor surface, and making airtight joints with said box at the forward and rearward sides of said'opening.floorwheels, means supporting said box` on said wheels, and bearings supporting said beater and said mouthpiece respectiVeIy, the bearings of said mouthpiece allowing 4the same limited freedom of rotation about the axis fof said beater independently of said box and said,y box supporting means.
