Abstract
139,409. Charles, L. A. Aug. 2, 1919. Valve-gear; regulating.-Valve-gear applicable to Diesel engines of the type described in Specification 129,606, [Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Carburetting-apparatus &c. for], with mearns for starting and regulating the speed, comprises a cam-shaft 1 capable of axial movement carrying for each cylinder a cam 6 for admitting air, an exhaust cam 9, an injection-air cam 11, and a cam 13 controlling the fuel-admission needle valve. The cam 6 is of constant section; the cam 9 is of constant section, but is provided with a projection 9'; and the cams 11, 13 are of varying section. The camshaft 1 abuts against a ball-bearing thrust collar 16 located within a bush 17 engaging a screwthread 18 on the interior of a sleeve 19 held in the casing by a key 20. The bush 17 is turned to move the cam-shaft axially by worm gear 23, 24 and hand-wheel 25. An extension 26 on the cam-shaft, when the latter is moved to the left, opens a valve and through a rotary distributor admits compressed air to the cylinders for starting-up. To start the engine, the cam-shaft 1 is moved to the left, opening the air valve and admitting compressed air to all cylinders, the projection 9' serving to lift the exhaust valve during the compression stroke. The cam-shaft is moved to the right to a position to give the required engine speed, or to the extreme right to stop the engine. An automatic governor driven by the engine, or a safety governor brought into operation by a sudden drop of load, may actuate the wheel 25.
