Dressing; tools and tool-holders; work - holders.- Relates to machines for the manufacture of grindstones, window heads, &c. of the type comprising a rotary workcarrying table, surfacing - tools traversed over the table, and tools adapted to operate on the sides of the stone. The table a on which the work is secured by a selfcentring jaw chuck, clamps, &c., is supported on adjustable cylindrical or conical rollers z, and is rotated at either a constant speed, or, by means of a conical pulley m and a belt-fork n connected to the tool slide s, at a variable speed. The socket of the square surfacing-tool 41 is carried in a boss 39 on the tool slide s and is positively rotated by means of a pinion 65 engaging a fixed rack 68 as the tool slide is moved over the work. The tool slide s and the cross slide 16 may be adjusted by hand or power. The vertically and horizontally adjustable side cutting-tool 107 is rotated by a hand-wheel 112, and may be used to assist the surfacing-tool. The surfacing - tool may be arranged parallel with, inclined to, or at an angle across, the tool slide, and the pinion 65 may have helical teeth. One or more supports 71 may be provided, and the vertically-moving slides are balanced by counterweights.
