Abstract

21,631. Munro, A. Oct. 13. Pens, reservoir. In reservoir pens provided with feed-tubes, these are made with an outer tube surrounding an inner tube or section of such a shape and size as to form a comparatively large air channel, and one or more capillary ink channels extending from the reservoir to near the nib point. Figs. 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9 show cross-sectional views through the outer tube 4 and some of the forms of inner sections which may be used, the capillary ink channels being formed by the incomplete or loose fit of the inner section in the tube 4. Fig. 4 shows an inner tube slit on the side furthest from the nib to form an extra capillary channel. Any number of slits may be made. Fig. 7 shows a section 7 fitting tightly in the tube 4 and provided with ink channels 8, though the section 7 may be a loose fit and the channels 8 omitted. Fig. 11 shows a tube specially applicable to the form of pen shown in Fig. 3 of Specification No. 20,065, A.D. 1907, no space being provided between the inner and outer tubes 3 and 4. The feed-tube may be employed in the self-filling pen described in the above Specification, and the inner section then extends to the upper part of the reservoir in the form of a complete tube. More than one of the above forms may be combined in the one feed-tube ; thus half the section of the inner tube may be cut away to enable the ink to be seen through the outer tube which in this case is of glass. The back part of the inner tube at the lower end may be cut away, and the outer tube may also be removed at this point. The outer tube may be made of rigid material such as metal or glass, while the inner section may be of soft material such as vulcanite. A wooden plug may be inserted between the tubes to prevent longitudinal movement, or the inner tube may be prolonged beyond the lower opening and bent backwards along the nib. A pen is shown fitted with a feed-tube as described above attached to an inner reservoir connected by a concertinashaped spring tube to the barrel and furnished with a stud projecting through the barrel, whereby the reservoir and the feed-tube can be moved forwards so that the feed-tube wets the nib. A hole is formed in the side of the reservoir opposite the stud and covered by a rubber tube, so that by depressing the stud also a drop of ink may be ejected on to the nib.
