B. FABER.
- PENHOLDER.
l: WITNESSES 7L Patented Dec. 26,. 1893.
NITED STATES EBERHARD FABER, OF \VEST NEWV BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 1,602, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed March 14, 1893.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBERHARD FABER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Test New Brighton,in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to so-called anti-nervous pen-holders, and consists in the improvements of the construction of the same as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved pen-holder complete, and having a pen inserted. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the handle divested of the other parts. Fig. 3, is across section on the line 00' 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is an end view. Fig. 5, is a sectional elevation on line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 6, is a side elevation of the short metallic tube furnishing the elastic nibs between which and the outer tube the tangs of the pens are inserted and secured to the handle by the grip of the nibs. Fig. 7, is a sectional elevation of the anti-nervous material of the handle and a metallic bushing surrounding and co=acting with the elastic nibs for holding the pens.
I provide a handle of wood or other approved material having the short reduced cylindrical terminal section 0, at the end to which the pens are connected, and the longer and larger but also reduced section b, intermediate of the said terminal section and the rest of the handle with corresponding shoulders d and e, at the junctions of the respective parts, and on the smaller end section 0, I fit the nib tube f, by its intact end portion with the extremity abutting against the shoulder d, and secure it with a rivet or indented projection g, said nib tube projecting a suitable distance beyond the section 0 of the handle and having several slits h, in the projecting portion and separating it into a number of individual nibs, which at their free extren1-' ities are bent inward as shown at 11, to guide the tangs of the pens so as to prevent them from being inserted within the nibs, and to prevent the nibs from being unduly bent in ward.
On the section b, of the handle and over the Serial No. 465,991. (No model.)
nib tube I lit the anti-nervous tube j, of rubher or otherapproved material so that it abuts at one end against the shoulder e, and projects about the same extent in the other direction as the nib tube, and within the projecting part and surrounding the nib tube I fit the bushing of metal 70, having about the same length as the nib tube so as to be confined securely in its position by the grip of the anti-nervous tube on it, and by the grip of its inner portion on the unslitted part of the nib tube, one or both, but preferably by the grip of the said anti-nervous tube. This bushing constitutes the outer shell between which and the nibs the tangs of the pens are secured. Its outer end is flared a little to guide the tangs of the pens.
The metallic nibs attached to and projecting beyond the end of the section 0, of the pen holder have more range, more powerful grip and are much more lasting than integral nibs of thehandle produced by slitting the reduced end portion of the handle, made longer for the purpose. The short bushing 70, terminate ing at or about the inner end of the nib tube and mainly secured by the grip of the antinervous tube is better than if extended the whole length of the anti-nervous tube be cause, the hold of the elastic anti=nervous tube by its contracted grip directly on the section b, is more secure than the grip of the rigid bushing would be in such case. The short bushing is also cheaper than the longer one would be. I
I prefer to make the anti-nervous tube with the ribbed or fluted exterior surface as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, but it may be smooth or be roughened in any other approved way.
I am aware of the patent to Rodrigue No. 413,092, in which a split metal tube applied to a reduced portion of the handle to receive the tangs of the pens between it and the said reduced portion of the handle, is covered with a tube of elastic anti-nervous material and I make no claim for such device, my device being essentially distinguished from that by the slitted nib tube extending beyond the end of the reduced portion of the handle and having the ends of the nibs bent inward to guide the shanks of the pens to the exterior of the nib tube, with the anti-nervous tubeapplied on and directly secured to the handle above the nib ICO tubewith,themetallicbushingoftheanti-nervous tubesurrounding the nib tube and having the flaring mouth to guide the pens into it, and guard against'the liability of being inserted in the anti-nervous tube outside of the bushing, which is the general tendency in the use of the deviceot' the above inentioned-patent for lack of the flaring mouth of the split tube. may also be cemented to the handle above the split tube if desired.
I claim- The combination in a pen holder, of the handle having the terminal and intermediate reduced sections and shoulders of the respective sections, of the n-ib tube slitted a part of its length andnfitted by its intact part on the terminal sectionof the handle with its slitted part projecting beyond theendof the handle,
20 and having the endsbent inward to guide-the The anti-nervous tube of my device shanks of the pens to its exterior; the tube of anti-nervous material fitted on the intermediate reduced section of the handle above the nib tube and projecting over the said nib tube, and being materially larger in the bore than the nib tube, and the metallic bushing of about the same length as the nib tube fitted
