Nitrogen oxides produced by submitting a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen to the action of an electric arc are collected directly from the inner zone of the arc. A small tube e, Figs. 1 and 2, having a water or air jacket k or the like, is used for this purpose, and thus the gases are rapidly cooled, while the tube is prevented from melting. One of the electrodes, Figs. 3 and 4, may be adapted for removing the nitrogen oxides according to this process. The arc is preferably surrounded by a tube f, Fig. 3, or by two tubes f, i, Fig. 4. In the latter case the mixture passing between the walls f, i cools the tube f, and is itself warmed up before it enters the electric arc.
