Abstract

7107. Malz, K. March 25. Hand sewing-tools; tufting.-The needle o and the thread clamp rod q of a band tufting-apparatus are mounted slidingly in a tube b and are reciprocated by connecting-rods n and cranks k, l. The crank bosses are adjustable by screws m so as to vary their throw, and are keyed on to the shafts h, i of pinions d,f. The pinions are rotated alternately by engagement with the oppositely-placed toothed sectors of the wheels c, e, which are con tinuously rotated by the hand-wheel. Flanges w are provided upon the wheels c, e, which engage with rollers on the sides of the pinions so as to prevent unintended movement of one pinion while the other is being rotated. The needle and clamp rod are secured to their side-bars by screws r. The screw r on the needle-bar is provided with a threadguiding eye. The needle and clamp rod are curved so that the needle always enters the material in advance of the last stitch. As an alternative to the intermittent spur-gearing, the needle and clamp rod may be alternately reciprocated by direct engagement with oppositely-disposed heart-shaped cam-grooves.
