Abstract

14,024. Lake, S. June 19. Clutches. - Friction clutches of the type described in Specification No. 2585, A.D. 1906, are applied by springs and disengaged by f l u i d pressure. A hub 1 secured to one shaft carries a piston 3, provided with spring piston rings 5 and carrying a cone 44 adapted to engage a cone 4 secured by flexible plates 10, 11 to a boss 67 on the other shaft. A ring 14 fits in a groove in the hub 1 and bears against rings 33, 34 secured to the hub. The ring 14 is secured to a plate 16, which is connected by springs 71, 72 to a vertically-adjustable pivoted piece 21. The parts are normally engaged by springs 7 on bolts 36 in the hub 1, and the cones 44, 4 are moved until wooden blocks 6 in the part 4 bear against the part 1, thus increasing friction. To disengage the parts, fluid under pressure is conveyed through the ring 14 to the space between the hub 1 and piston 3. To keep the parts disengaged when the pressure is withdrawn, cams 26, Fig. 4, may be rotated by a wrench.
