Branches and mains, connecting.- Branch pipes are connected to mains by attaching a sleeve to the end of the pipe and compressing packing between this sleeve and another loose one by means of a gland screwed into the main. A pipe e is screwed into a sleeve f having an inwardly-turned flange f<1>, the joint being made tight by a ring g of soft metal. The sleeve is made tight in the socket b by means of a gland' which screws into the socket b and presses against a bevel-edged ring j, thereby . laterally spreading the packing h between it and the sleeve f. In addition to the packing h, a soft-metal ring k may be used.
