Abstract

19,707. Spencer, C. M. Sept. 29. Lathes; screwing; milling; chucks.-In an automatic screw-machine, the hollow spindles 11 are mounted in a head which is intermittently rotated in a frame 13 by cams on a disk 18, a lever, and a pawl 15, and is locked by a pin 20 controlled by a lever 21 and a cam on the disk 18 when the blanks are in position to be operated on by turning, shaping, cutting-off, knurling, and other tools and threading-dies mounted in the rest 1, which is longitudinally adjustable on the bed, and in the rest 50, which is traversed along the bed by cams on a drum 52. The tool-holders of the rest 1 are simultaneously advanced by a cam disk 10, an oscillating plate 7 with an attached arm 9, and toggles 6, the outer toggle of each pair being pivoted on a block 4, adjustable by means of a screw 5. As each work spindle comes into its lowest position, a cam on the drum 17 moves the slide 32 to withdraw the wedge 30 on the said spindle from beneath the levers 29 to allow the tube 26 to move longitudinally and the jaws 28 to release the bar or rod and then another cam on the drum 17 moves the slide 25 and tube 22 to feed the bar forward. The split end 24 of the tube 22 always grips the work lightly, and its collar 23 engages a ring 33 while the spindle head is rotating in the frame 13. All the work spindles are rotated in one direction from the central hollow shaft 37 by gearing 36, 35 and a clutch 43, with the exception of the one carrying the work being screwed, which is rotated in the opposite direction by the shaft 41, the gearing 40, 39, and the clutch 43, which has been moved out of frictional engagement with the wheel 35 aud into position to engage a pin 46 on the wheel 39 by means of a lever 47 and another lever 49 controlled by a cam on the drum 17.
