Abstract

17,384. Dombret, E. Sept. 28, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas and like engines, crank chambers and gearing for. The changespeed and reversing-gear and the clutch of a motor vehicle are enclosed in a casing cast in one piece with the crank-chamber of the engine, the parts being arranged so that they may be removed without dismounting the engine. The lower part c of the engine casing is extended beyond the wall d to form a box e for the reception of the speedgear and the clutch f. The gear-box has three covers, one at the top, another i at the side furthest from the engine, and a third at the back supporting the reversing-pinions. The crank-shaft a carries at one end the outer member of the clutch and is supported in the wall d of the casing. The other clutch member is fixed to the spindle g, which is supported at one end in a cavity in the crank-shaft, and at the other end by a sleeve h bearing in the cover i. The speed-gear consists of three pinions formed integral with a sleeve n on a countershaft o, and a sliding member mounted on the spindle g and adapted to drive either directly or through the pinions. The gear may be dismounted by unscrewing the nut p from the spindle o, which may then be slid out and the sleeve n removed through the top. The cover i and sleeve h are also removed, and the nuts s unscrewed, thus enabling the spindle g and inner clutch member u to be passed through the top of the gear-case. The fly-wheel g of the engine is mounted on the opposite end of the crank shaft, and in the case of a four-cylinder engine an auxiliary fly-wheel x may be arranged as shown, forming a connecting- disk between the two parts of the crank-shaft a.
