Sifting and separating flour and meal &c.-Relates to apparatus for separating break-flour from break-stock, or for scalping, grading, or dusting middlings, semolina, or chop, or for dusting, grading, or cleaning wheat or other cereals. The material falls from the feed-hopper A, which has a fluted roller C and a gate adjusted by a spring D, through a current of air on to the top of an adjustable inclined sieve F of silk or wire gauze or perforated material. The flour passes through the sieve with the air, and down a passage G to an expansion chamber H, the lighter particles passing through the fan M to a dust collector. The remaining chop passes down the sieve F, and is subjected to suction air currents which cause slight friction of the stock on the gauze surface, thereby brightening the semolina and middlings, and removing fibrous matter, which falls into a collecting-chamber and is discharged by a conveyer 0. The remainder of the chop passes on to a second inclined sleeve F<1>, through which air currents. pass and in which the semolina and middlings are separated from the broken wheat and branny particles, which are then graded at Q for the following break-rolls, the lighter particles being - removed by an air current at V and discharged by a worm W. The middlings and semolina are discharged by conveyers P<1>, P<2>, P<3> and pass direct to purifiers, or as required. The undersides of the sieves are kept clean by adjustable brushes R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5>, and thumb-screws are provided for tightening the gauze covers. The sieves may be stationary or in action. Slides K regulate the air current to the fan M, and slides U the intensity of the exhaust under the sections of the sieve F<1>. The machine may be constructed with three or more inclined sieves and with or without air currents for further dusting or grading.
