Abstract

10,998. Bromiley, W. I., Hodgson, H. E., and Greenwood, E. M. May 26. Milling.-The working and grinding surfaces of carding-engine flats are milled to the required outline and depth by a copying-machine with an automatically reversed feed-motion. The cutter spindle 20, Figs. 1 and 3, is carried by a weighted slide 21, supported by a rod 25 engaging a templet. At the end of the cutting-stroke, a tumbler lever 28 having a spring stop 29 engages the adjustable stud 27, and supports the slide with the cutter clear of the work during the return stroke ; at the close of the latter, a stud 30 disengages the tumbler. The carriage for the cutter slide moves on ways on a saddle 1 traversed by a screw 4 on a bed 2. Duplicate parts are arranged at each end of the bed 2, one end only being shown in the Figures, for simultaneously milling each end of a flat 24. The feedmotions for the two saddles have a connecting- shaft 41 geared to a parallel shaft on each saddle. The shafts drive worm-wheels 5 which can be clutched to the screws 4 to traverse the carriages and give a quick return as controlled automatically by the gear 12, 13, 15, and the dog-rods 18 connected to the carriages. The flat 24 to be milled is held by adjustable eccentric clamps 36 with its ends upon supports 31 directly under the cutters. The machine may be arranged to cut on both strokes ; in this case the wheels 5 drive at equal speeds and the tumbler gear 28 is unnecessary. When forming the grinding-surfaces, the flats are turned over and the templet is dispensed with.
