Cards, punching.-The punches 1 are guided and supported by a fixed plate 2, upon which their heads rest, above a guide-plate 5 and the punchplate 6, which are attached, with a space between them for a card 20, to a sliding frame 8. Above the punches are punch-rods 11, which are guided in a stepped block 10. The selecting-slides 13 are arranged to slide horizontally in suitable guides and a stepped block 15, and their ends are hooked for the attachment of the strings of the reading- machine. There is a row of punch-rods 11 for each row of punches, and the rods of each row are alternately long and short, as shown in Fig. 2, so that there are two horizontal rows of selecting- slides for each row of punch-rods, thus allowing stronger slides to be used. The slides are normally held by springs over the ends of the punchrods, but when the machine is in operation, certain slides are pulled back by the reading-machine as the frame 8 commences to be raised by cams or eccentrics acting through links. When the card reaches the lower ends of the punches, it lifts the punches and rods corresponding to the retracted slides, while the other punches perforate the card. As the frame 8 descends, the heads of the punches come in contact with the plate 2, and the punches are pulled out of the card. Two or more camactuated card pushers push the bottom card out of a receptacle and between the plates 5, 6, thus displacing the punched card. In machines for punching fine-gauge cards, the punch-rods in each row may be of three or more different lengths, and in machines for coarse-gauge cards, all the punch-rods in each row may be of the same length.
