Abstract

4044. Smith, H. F. Feb. 27. Feed-water, supplying and controlling. - The supply of water to a steam generator, used in connexion with a suction gas-producer, is controlled so that the steam and air drawn through the producer are always mixed together in a constant proportion. The apparatus depends for its action upon the fact that, if the head of water over an orifice is kept proportional to the pressure of air on a vane situated in the air-inlet pipe, the flow of water through the orifice is proportional to the flow of air through the pipe. A water supply M is led into a cylindrical vessel D, supported, preferably, on knife-edge bearings, and provided with a slot in its circumference to admit the water-pipe P and to allow the vessel to rotate about its centre through an angle of twenty to thirty degrees. An annular overflow K surrounds the supporting- shaft. A weight is placed on the circumference of the cylinder so as to be directly under the supporting-shaft when the orifice 0 lies in the plane of the water level ; the size of this orifice may be adjusted by means of a valve N. A vane A is carried by a curved arm connected to the cylinder, so as to move freely and occupy a central position in the air-pipe. The cylinder is supported in a semicylindrical casing E which is divided into two parts so that the drip from the overflow K may be discharged through an opening G, and so run to waste, but the flow through the orifice 0 is run into the air-pipe, and so passes with the air to the vaporizer. This consists of a series of hollow disks or surfaces B, which may be heated by the exhaust gases from the engine so that the water may be entirely converted into steam. Consequently the proportion of moisture in the air remains constant, regardless of the quantity of air passing through the inlet pipe. Vanes H are provided in the cylinder to steady its movement.
