2275. Livesey, B. C. Feb. 6. Yarns, warping.-Consists of improvements in the arrangement and construction of the variablespeed mechanism by which the warp-beam driving- drum is driven in the warping-machine described in Specifications No. 217, A.D. 1903, and No. 10,426, A.D. 1904. The two cone pulleys A, A<1> are mounted at the end of the machine, and the shaft a of the pulley A is constantly driven by means of a belt pulley B, though a loose pulley may be employed. A pinion on the shaft a<1> of the pulley A' gears with teeth e<2> on the periphery of the loose or driving member e<1> of a conical friction clutch on the shaft d of the driving-drum D, the driven member e being fast on the shaft d. A fixed sleeve F surrounding the shaft d has a spiral groove, in which is engaged a pin g on a lever provided with a fork g<2> engaging a groove in the clutch member e'. The fork lever is moved by means of a treadlelever K, to cause the member e<1> to engage or to be disengaged from the member e, or the member e<1> may be moved out of contact by a spring. The warp beam D<1> is mounted on arms M on a shaft m, on which is fixed an arm M<1> connected by a guided and weighted chain m<1> to the shifting-device a<2> for the belt of the cone pulleys. As the yarn is wound on to the beam, the arm M<1> is moved to shift the driving-belt of the cone pulleys, thus diminishing the speed of rotation of the driving-drum D. The shaft m is provided with a friction device comprising a fixed disk T and a disk T' adjustably mounted on the shaft in order that the tension on the warp-beam arms M may be adjusted. A disk of felt, leather, or the like may be placed between the two disks. In an alternative arrangement of the driving-gear, the shafts a, a' are provided with friction disks connected by a pair of friction disks which are carried by an arm on the shaft m. As the shaft m turns, the position of the pair of friction disks is altered relatively to the disks on the shafts a, a', to diminish the speed of rotation of the drum D. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that the motion for stopping the machine when an end breaks is similar to that described in Specification No. 10,426, A.D. 1904, and that wires or bars are placed adjacent to or between the staple-shaped drops to assist in guiding the drops, and to support their weight upon the yarn and prevent it from sagging.
