Abstract

16,535. Heath, W. E. July 26. Stoppers; capsules, bottle, jar, and like.-Relates to a sealing-device for bottles and jars, comprising a metal cap adapted to form a perfect seal, which can be easily removed from the bottle &c., without the use of a tool for the purpose. The cap 4, Fig. 1, has a narrow horizontal flange 5 and a depending flange 6, the latter extending slightly below the bead on the bottle neck when in operative position. The flanges 5, 6 are divided by a radial slot 7. Formed integral with the cap and occupying the space within the flange 5 is a fingerpiece 8, which is joined to the flange at a point at right-angles to the slot 7, as shown. The cap is preferably stamped from a single blank, and then bent to form the flanges 5, 6. In operation, a flat disc of cork &c. 9, Fig. 5, adapted to rest on the bottle mouth, and a flanged disc 10 adapted to embrace the mouth of the bottle, are placed in the cap 4, which is then applied to the bottle, the flange 6 being forced by a suitable tool into engagement beneath the bead 3 on the bottle. To open the bottle, the finger-piece is bent upwards and lateral pressure is applied to it, so causing the flanges 5, 6 to separate along the line 7, when the flange 6 can be disengaged from beneath the bead 3. To prevent distortion of the cap previous to use, it may be covered with a flanged disc or cap ; or, a narrow protecting-strip may be placed around the flange 6. Previous to opening the bottle, the flanged cap may be forced from its position, and the protecting- strip around the flange may be either broken or slipped off. In a modification, the finger-piece may be formed integral with the depending flange and adjacent to the slot, and the top of the cap may be made solid instead of in the skeleton form shown in Fig. 1. In this case, the dividing-slot must extend entirely across the top of the cap, to facilitate opening the bottle.
