Refinement Of Pig-Iron, Manufacture Of Cast Iron, And Steel Manufacture Other Than In Revolving Furnaces
(AREA)
Abstract
22,767. Talbot, B. Oct. 21. Open-hearth processes; direct processes of obtaining.-The refining and finishing of the metal, when manufacturing ingot iron and steel, are effected on separate hearths in the same furnace. The metal may be recarburized in a ladle, when the latter is used to convey it to the finishing-furnace. The finishing-hearth may be charged with scrap, or be worked in conjunction with a permanent metal bath. In some cases, refining is effected on a basic hearth, and finishing on an acid hearth. When treating iron ore and carbon briquettes, they are partially reduced on the fore hearth, before immersion into the metallic bath on the refining hearth.
