Abstract

8465. Mills, B. J. B., [Aluminium Press Co.]. April 14. Rotary machines; lithographic and like printing. -Relates to means for moving the printing- cylinders into and out of printing relation with the impression cylinders, particularly applicable to planographic colour-printmg machines. In the arrangement shown, the printing-cylinders 4 are moved to and away from the impression cylinder 3 by rotating their eccentric bearings 5 by means of toothed segments 6 and rack-bars 7. The bars 7 at each side of the machine are connected to levers 11 pivoted on the fixed framing and having rollers 34 which are operated by a cam 26 on the end of the cylinder 3. The cams 26 at opposite sides of the machine are fixed on the ends of a shaft 27 journalled in the cylinder. An arm 30 on the shaft 27 is acted upon by a spring rod 32 which holds the cam 26 in either its inner or outer position against a stop 28 or a stop 29. When the cam 26 is in its outer position, as shown in Fig. 3, the rollers 34 roll on its inner surface, and the bars 7 &c. are operated to move the cylinders 4 into printing position. When the cam 26 is in its inner position, the rollers 34 roll over its outer surface and the cylinders 4 are moved out of printing position. When the cylinders 4 are in printing position, the levers 11 are locked by means of a projection 13 on each lever formed with a Ing 14 engaged by a hook or latch 16 pivoted on the framing. On the latch 16 is a pivoted piece 20, which is engaged by a roller 35 on the cam 26 to move the latch out of engagement with the lug 14 just before the cam engages the roller 34. The cams 26 are moved from one position to the other by means of a cam arm 38 engaging the roller 35. There may be a cam-arm 38 at each side of the machine, or at one side only. The cam-arm 38 is pivoted at 37 and is passed inwardly by a spring rod 43. It is held in its outer position against a stop 40 by a latch 45 engaging a projection 42, and, when freed by the latch, it is moved by the spring 43 to its inner position against a stop 41. An arm 48 projects from the shaft 37 of the cam 38 and is provided with a pin engaging a slot in the end of a rod 50 connected to a lever 66 linked to a lever which may be operated, when desired, by a foot-rod or treadle projecting through the foot-plate of the machine. A cam 77 and an arm 75 on the lever 66 prevents the operation at an undesirable time. The downward movement of the rod 50 raises the cam-arm 38. On the rod 50 is a projection connected by a link 58 to a pivoted pawl carrier 57, having a pawl 56 en gaging a ratchet-wheel attached to a cam 53. The cam 53 engages a roller 62 on the latch 45, and has alternate high and low parts, the high parts holding the latch 45 away from the projection 42, and the low parts permitting it to be moved into engagement by the spring 64. At each operation of the rod 50, the cam is moved one step, to move the latch 45 into or out of engaging position, according to whether it was previously out of, or in, engagement.
