Abstract

24,151. Lake, H. H., [Economic Machine Co.]. Nov. 4. Stopping-apparatus; cylinder machines with plane printing-surfaces.-Relates to the class of stopmotions for printing-presses and other machines, in which the part which shifts the driving-belt, trips the impression cylinder, or applies the brake, is held out of action by an electricallyreleased latch. Fig. 1 shows the feed end of a cylinder printing-press, and Figs. 2 and 6 show the stop-motion. The sheets are fed from the table A<1> to the cylinder A<2>. The press is provided with a footboard A', with foot-spindles A', A<6>, for applying the brake and tripping the cylinder, respectively, and with a band-lever A<4> for shifting the belt. The stop-motions are mounted adjustably on a frame C, which is provided with b earings for two shafts a, b. The shaft a is connected with the lever A' and brake spindle A<5> by arms and ro is a<1>, a<4>, and the shaft b is connected with the cylinder trip spindle A<6> by an arm b<1> and rod b<2>. Each shaft a, b is operated, when the stop-motion is released, by a spring or weight. In the Figures, an operating-weight G is shown, adjustable on an arm g pivoted at g<1> on a bracket adjustable on a vertical rod g<4>. The arm g is connected by a link g<6> to an arm H on the shaft a or b. The connection between the arm H and link g<6> is adjustable, to vary the angle they make with each other when in the locking position. This connection may consist of a pin on the end of the link g<6>, adjustable by screws h<2> in a slot in the end of the arm H. On each shaft a, b is an arm I pivoted at j<2> to the lower link J of a toggle, the upper link J' of which is pivoted at a fixed point j on the standard D or D'. The upper link J' is pivoted to the link J, and is formed with a socket j<3> in which the catch-bolt j<4> is arranged. The catch j<4> interlocks with a latch e, operated to release the catchbolt, and permit of the operation of the shaft a or b by an electromagnet e' and armature e<2>. The magnets and armatures are in boxes E E<1> secured to the standards D, D'. When in the locked position, as shown in Fig. 6. the toggle is nearly straight and takes the greater part of the strain of the weight G from the latch. The magnet e of the mechanism for operating the shaft a is in circuit with a battery f and a two-sheet detector F, which acts, in a suitable known manner, to close the circuit when more than one sheet, or an abnormal thickness of material is fed, and thereby stop the machine. The magnets e' of the mechanisms controlling both shafts a, b are in circuit with the battery f and a no sheet detector F<1>, so that the cylinder is tripped and the machine stopped when no sheet is fed. The toggles are returned to the locked position by bell-crank levers K operated by foot-spindles K<2> raised by springs m. The lower arms of the levers k engage rolers l<1> on the links J'. The shafts a, b may be operated by spring-pressed rods applied to arms, such as H, on the shafts, in place of the links g and weights.
