Abstract

9111. Northey, P. W., and Electric Motive Power Co. April 19. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed gearing applicable for motor vehicles &c. Fig. 1 shows a bevel-gear epicyclic train in which the wheel H is fixed to the driving-shaft, the planetpinions I are carried on arms on the driven shaft, and the wheel G is fixed to a casing F which encloses the gearing. A shell D<2> fitted over the casing F and connected to it by pins carries an armature D which is placed between two annular electromagnets B, C, the one B fixed to the driving- shaft, and the other C to a stationary ring C<2>. When the magnet B is energized, it attracts the armature and the entire gear is carried round with the driving-shaft; when the magnet C is energized, the wheel G is held stationary, the planet pinions roll round it, and the driven shaft moves at a reduced speed. Fig. 2 shows another arrangement; the casing F, which encloses the gearing, carries the armature and the pinions L, L<1>, and the pinions J, K are fixed on the driving and driven shafts respectively. In the gear shown in Fig. 3, an internally and externally toothed eccentric ring M is used to gear the pinion J on the driving-shaft to the internal wheel N fixed to the driven shaft. The armature D is secured to the boss of the eccentric P upon which the wheel M is supported. In all these arrangements, the gearing is enclosed and protected by a casing formed by the component parts.
