Abstract
4144. Horn, P. March 5. Screw propellers; rudders.-A tapering arched tunnel or passage b is provided in the bottom to afford a free flow of water to the screw which is placed in the after end of the tunnel. Helical ribs d of opposite hand to the screw may be secured to the walls to direct the water to the propeller. Instead of such ribs, small screws of coarser pitch may be placed on the shaft forward of the main propeller, as shown in Fig. 5, to direct the water to it. Two rudders are fitted, one at each side of the tunnel, so that the flow of water is not impeded. A similar channel may be formed in stern-wheel vessels.
