Abstract

3062. Thiel, O. Feb. 11. Iron furnaces.-In a process for producing iron directly from the ore, a regenerative furnace, provided with gas outlets c, and a gas inlet b connected to gas generators, is employed. The gas from the generators is heated to a temperature of 1000‹ C. or more before entering the furnace. The furnace is charged with about two-thirds of the fluxes to be employed and worked at its full heat; then the gas supply is cut off and the charge of ore, carbon, and remaining portion of the fluxes is introduced, and the gas re-admitted. As soon as the reduction has been carried far enough, the gas is again cut off, molten iron is run into the furnace, and the gas is re-admitted until the reduced iron has been completely incorporated with the molten iron. Finally, the gas is cut off and the furnace is worked by means of the regenerators in a manner similar to that carried out in the Martin process. In the preparation of the furnace charge the apparatus described in Specification No. 10,923, A.D. 1894, may be employed.
