Abstract

18,578. Nichols, J. S. C. Aug. 30. Stopping way.-At each side of the veseel is hinged a plate 2, which is normally held close against the skin as shown on the port side in Fig. 2. By slacking off the cable 7 from the drum 8, the plate is allowed to assume the position shown at the starboard side in the same Figure. in which position it retards the vessel. When against the side, the forward edges of the plates are covered by bow-plates 5 provided with lugs 9. As shown in Fig. 4, stays 10 may be used in place of the cables 7. Preferably the hinges are of spring type, to throw the plates outwards when released by the cables or other fastenings.
