Abstract

188,214. Dargue, A. W., and Dargue, F. L. Nov. 18, 1921. Draughting-machines.-Relates to instruments in which a straight-edge 4 is provided with pinions 7 engaging in racks 2 secured to the edges of a drawing-board 1. The straight-edge carries a bar or runway 14 spaced from the straightedge, and having its upper and lower edges parallel to the working edge 4<1> of the straightedge. Slidable in the space between the bar 14 and the surface of the straight-edge is a plate 15 having rollers 16 which run on the upper edge of the bar, and also carrying a spring 17 the ends of which carry rollers 17<1> bearing on the lower edge of the bar. A bracket 18 secured to the plate carries a rubber &c. roller 20 bearing on the bar 14 to take the weight of the plate from the straight-edge. The plate is extended upwards in the form of a semicircle at the centre of which is pivoted a member comprising two arms 22, 22' at right-angles, to which scales &c 23, 23<1> can be secured. The arm 22 carries a spring plunger 26 adapted to pass into one of a series of holes 27 in the plate 15, so that the arms can be quickly set at a given angular relation, such as 30', 45‹ &c., to the straight-edge. The arm 22' carries a vernier 28 co-operating with a scale 29 on the plate 15, to enable the arms to be set to any desired position, in which they can be secured by a clamp 30. Means for moving the plate 15 by equal steps along the bar 14 comprises a lever 32 pivoted to the bracket 18 and carrying a pivoted pawl 33 adapted to engage in successive graduations on the bar 14, the pawl being drawn inwardly by a spring 34. The tail 32<1> of the lever carries a screw adapted to contact with the surface of the plate 15, the required spacing being obtained by alternately depressing and releasing the button 36. Means for preventing disengagement of the pinions 7 from the racks 2 comprise brackets 10 pivoted to the ends of the straight-edge and carrying rollers 11 engaging in grooves 12 on the undersides of the racks. The members 10 are slotted at 10<1> so that the rollers can be lowered and the brackets swung clear when the straight-edge is to be lifted from the board. The board is provided with pulleys 8 over which pass cords 9 attached to the straightedge, counter-weights being attached to the cords when the board' is not horizontal.
