Abstract

188,178. Sturmey, J. J. H., and Peart, W. J. Oct. 19, 1921. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing suitable for cycle hubs comprises two trains with separate planet gears 9, 10, Fig. 1, and a single internally-toothed annulus 11 movable together laterally so that five speeds are obtained. The gears 9, 10 mesh respectively with sun gears 6, 5 of different diameters loose and slidable with the rest of the trains on a fixed axle 2. The driving-element is a clutch sleeve 4 and the driven element the hub shell 3. The middle speed, a one-to-one drive, is obtained by the position shown in Fig. 1. The drive passes across the sleeve 11<c> of the annulus 11 to ratchet pawls 3d on the hub. Then each train gears separately both up and down. One gear-down position is shown in Fig. 6. The annulus 11 is driven from the sleeve 4 in both low gears and the two-part planet carrier 7, 8 drives, the hub through pawls 3<c>. Sun gear 6 is held by a pawl 6<c> and recesses 2f, Fig. 4. The other gear-down position is obtained by movement farther to the left, when the gear 6 is freed and the gear 5 anchored by dogs 2d. One gear-up position is shown in Fig. 9. The planet-carrier 7, 8 is driven by a dog-end 8<b> engaging the sleeve 4 in both gear-up positions, and the annulus 11 drives the hub through the pawls 3d. The sun gear 6 is held by a pawl 6<b>, Fig. 4, engaging recesses 2<g>. The other gear-up position is obtained by movement farther to the right, when the gear 6 is freed and gear 5 is anchored by dogs 2e. In all cases the hub is ratchetdriven to allow coasting. Operation is effected by a collar 2<c> actuated by a spring plunger within the axle 2.
